Introducing The Future of Justice: A Conservative Vision to Enhance Public Safety in Louisiana
Public safety remains a top concern for Louisiana residents, surpassing even economic issues in recent surveys. While many citizens support strong law enforcement measures, there is also broad public backing for evidence-based strategies that promote rehabilitation and reduce recidivism. A new report by the Pelican Institute for Public Policy and Smart on Crime Louisiana outlines a conservative vision for public safety, balancing accountability with redemption to achieve the best outcomes for Louisiana.
To improve public safety and the effectiveness of Louisiana’s justice system, the report’s author, national public safety and criminal justice expert Jordan Richardson, recommends that Louisiana policymakers:
Expand reentry and specialty court programs statewide to reduce recidivism.
Implement a felony classification system to ensure fair, consistent, and proportionate sentencing.
Improve crime data collection and analysis to guide law enforcement efforts and inform future policymaking.
Reduce and eventually eliminate reliance on fines and fees, ensuring justice is not dependent on individuals’ financial means.
Smart on Crime Louisiana Chairman Jay Lapeyre emphasized, “Good public policy should be evidence-based and supported by data. The recommendations in this report reflect Smart on Crime Louisiana’s commitment to strengthening communities, increasing public safety, reducing crime and recidivism, and making the best use of scarce taxpayer dollars.”
Pelican Institute CEO Daniel Erspamer added, “Public safety is top of mind for nearly every Louisianan. The question: how do we improve outcomes through evidence-based policies that are proven to reduce crime? Jordan Richardson’s report outlines a compelling, consensus-building vision for the next phase of work to improve public safety and measure results. All of us involved with the Smart on Crime Louisiana coalition look forward to working with legislative leadership and other stakeholders to explore ways to implement these ideas in the coming months and years.”
By adopting these reforms, Louisiana can create a justice system that prioritizes safety while offering second chances. This balanced approach benefits communities, taxpayers, and law enforcement alike, paving the way for a safer and more equitable future.
